A courtier was a person who regularly attended the court of a monarch. Courtiers would often compete with one another, trying to gain the attention and approval of the monarch, who would occasionally appoint a courtier to a position of power. In The 48 Laws of Power, Greene mentions how the world today can often be compared to a “scheming court,” and thus we must learn to adopt the strategies and tricks courtiers used to get ahead.
